We Remember Marsha Pekasky!
Marsha L. Pekasky, of Oakland, California, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, March 10, 2014 at age 66. She was predeceased by her parents, Dorothy Pekasky and Albert Pekasky, and is survived by her sister, Marilyn Pekasky and best friend Leslie Bowers.
Marsha was born and grew up in Tillamook, a little town on the Oregon coast. She graduated from Tillamook High School in 1966. She held several jobs over the years, from working in a shrimp factory to being a blackjack dealer when certain kinds of gambling were legalized in Oregon. She also worked for a tech company, and moved from Tillamook to San Diego when they did.
After leaving the tech company she moved to the Bay Area and went back to school to become a medical assistant. After that she took computer classes at Richmond PAL. She started volunteering at PAL, and was shortly thereafter offered a salaried position with them. That was about 15 years ago, and she loved it (and the kids!) so much that she never left.
A few years ago a little dog was found near the PAL offices, and Marsha took him in and named him Barkley. He was her constant companion until her death, and they loved each other dearly. Barkley came to work with her every day and made it his job to also take care of the kids. They were quite a team! Barkley has a new home with Marsha’s sister, who also loves him. He has doggie friends at his new home, but he’ll never forget the kids at PAL.
Needless to say, Marsha will be sorely missed at the Richmond PAL office. Hopefully Barkley will be able to visit.
